Skip the necktie and the crowded brunch buffet this year, your dad would much rather be at Mount Baker seeing the sights, experiencing the culinary delights, and making this father’s day the best it can be.
June is an amazing time to visit Mount Baker for any reason. With the snow still clinging to the peaks, you can hike sunny, flower-filled trails in a t-shirt, while staring at the snow-caked ridges above you. Places like Bagley Lakes or Horseshoe Bend give you that classic North Cascades backdrop without needing snowshoes.
If he’s more into casting than climbing, you’re covered. The Nooksack River winds through the foothills of the entire area, and early summer is a good time to throw a line in. Salmon season is still ahead, but trout fishing can be solid. You can even rent gear in Bellingham if you didn’t bring your own. If you want to know more about the amazing fishing Mount Baker has to offer, check out our blog post on the topic.

If you’re staying closer to Bellingham, make the most out of it. Mount Baker Highway is an experience on its own. The drive follows the river, slipping past waterfalls and scenic vistas that would be go-to destinations anywhere else. In June, the snow has usually melted, meaning that your drive will end at the Heather Meadows visitor center, a car accessible plateau that boasts panoramic views of mountain valleys, gleaming glaciers, and even sights out to Canada on a clear day.
Once you’re back in town, visit the North Fork Brewery for pizza, beer, and a little red cabin to enjoy it in. Or you could always head into Bellingham for a brewery crawl if your dad’s into that. Places like Aslan, Kulshan, and Wander all brew their own stuff. If he’s the kind who’ll talk hops with strangers at the bar, you’ll be there awhile.

Not every dad wants a packed schedule though, and that’s where Glacier comes in. It’s slow in the best way, with one road in, one road out, and with no cell service, it will allow him to truly get away from it all. Rather than fielding calls, grab breakfast at Wake ‘n Bakery, rent a cabin with an onsite hot tub, sit on the porch, play cards, and just let time pass for a bit. No itinerary needed.
You don’t need fancy gear, or a packed schedule to love Mount Baker. Just bring your dad, a decent pair of shoes, and a jacket. June mornings are cold up there, even on Father’s Day.
