The first weekend of August is the busiest the Mt. Baker Highway corridor gets all summer, and it happens in the quietest possible way. The Bigfoot Festival brings Maple Falls out into the sun on Wednesday, August 5. The Subdued Stringband Jamboree fills the Deming Log Show Fairgrounds with music from August 6 through 8. Between the two, roadside blueberry stands sit out along the highway on the honor system, buckets and a coffee can for your cash.
Two towns, one week, about fifteen miles of road connecting them. It is a good excuse to come up before the summer closes.
The Subdued Stringband Jamboree, August 6 to 8
Now in its 26th year, the Jamboree takes over the Deming Log Show Fairgrounds at 3295 Cedarville Road, roughly ten miles east of Bellingham on Highway 542. Fiddle, banjo, guitar, upright bass. Musicians play the main stages through the afternoon and evening, then the late-night stages pick up and carry on well past dark.
The festival’s own long-running line is When It’s Blackberry Time in Bellingham, It’s Jamboree Time For Me, which tells you most of what you need to know about the season it belongs to.
A few things worth knowing before you go. Cell reception at the fairgrounds is very weak, which regulars treat as a feature rather than a problem. There is on-site camping, and campsites can be reserved ahead. Children under 14 and adults over 80 get in free. There are workshops during the day and a kids’ activities program, so the weekend holds up for families and not only for the late-night crowd.
If camping in a field for three nights is not how you want to end your summer, the corridor is the alternative. You can drive up the highway in the evening, sleep in a real bed, and be back at the gate the next morning.
The Maple Falls Bigfoot Festival, August 5
Maple Falls does not put on many large events, which is part of why this one is worth planning around. The Bigfoot Festival runs from 9am to 4pm at the town hall, and it leans into exactly what the name suggests. It is unhurried, local, and built for kids, and it fits neatly on the day before the Jamboree gates open.

Maple Falls sits about halfway between Deming and Glacier on Mt. Baker Highway, which makes it an easy stop rather than a separate trip.
Blueberry season along Mt. Baker Highway
August is peak blueberry season in Whatcom County, and the corridor handles it the way it handles most things, without much fuss. Farm stands along Mt. Baker Highway keep fresh berries out through July and August, several of them self serve. You leave your money in the box and take your flat.
The u-pick farms cluster in the lower valley near Everson, Lynden, and Nugents Corner, and most are open mornings and afternoons.
It is the kind of stop that makes a drive into part of the trip. Berries on the counter by mid morning, cobbler by evening.
Making a weekend of it
The corridor rewards people who do not schedule it too tightly. The Nooksack River runs alongside much of the highway. The trails in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest are open and dry in August, which is not true for most of the year. Heather Meadows and the Artist Point road are usually clear by then, though the road opening date shifts with the snowpack.

Where to stay for both events
Staying in the corridor puts you within a reasonable drive of Deming and a few minutes from Maple Falls, with the mountain at your back instead of a two-hour trip from Seattle.
